Breakfast in La Malagueta: what to do with a morning by the beach

The neighbourhood between the port and the beach, and how to spend a morning in it without rushing.

La Malagueta is where most visitors go for the beach and where surprisingly few of them stop for anything else. It deserves a slower morning.

8:30 · Coffee first

The city belongs to its residents until about ten in the morning. This is the best hour of the day: the light is soft, the promenade has runners and dog walkers, and you can hear the sea.

We open at 8:30 on weekdays and 9:00 at weekends.

10:00 · The seafront promenade

Walk out towards the water. The Paseo Marítimo Pablo Ruiz Picasso runs along Malagueta beach and, if you follow it towards the port, brings you to La Farola, the lighthouse that gives the area its name.

11:00 · Centre Pompidou

The coloured glass cube is impossible to miss. The permanent collection takes just over an hour and it is one of the most pleasant short museum visits in the city.

12:00 · Muelle Uno and the port

Shops, terraces and the best views back towards the city from the water. There is often a craft market along the quay.

13:00 · Gibralfaro, if you have the legs

The climb is real, but the view from the top — the city, the Alcazaba, the port and the bullring below — is the best in Málaga. Do not attempt it at midday in August.

Practical notes

  • Beach: Malagueta is an urban beach. Do not expect a hidden cove; do expect everything within walking distance.
  • Busiest hours: 11:00 to 13:00 at weekends for anywhere serving breakfast.
  • August: everything happens before 11:00 or after 20:00. The middle of the day belongs to the shade.
